023 Gone Fishing & Flying (not fly fishing)

We decided to walk at Liberty Station this morning. It's the former Naval Training Center, set up about 100 years ago to train naval recruits. A decade or so ago it was privatized and turned into housing, recreation areas, space for civic organizations, and commercial shops. I prefer to avoid all that and go to the canal behind the developed areas.

Here's the time.

The salt water channel runs up to what used to be the San Diego River's entrance into San Diego Bay. Now the river goes straight out to the ocean, over by Mission Bay.

There must be plenty of fish in this channel, because the birds are busy finding their breakfast. Here's a brown pelican.

And two more, brazenly trespassing on government property.

This is a cormorant. An aquatic bird. A powerful swimmer (underwater).

We stopped to watch it fishing

OK, he has it now but next tosses it into the air and takes it head-first. The fish was NOT cooperating with this plan, and the bird lost it 3 times.

But each time it was caught again, until he managed to choke it down.

We walked from one end to the other in about 45 minutes.

Bridge at the West end of the channel, leading to the Big Bay.

The SS Recruit, a ship built on land for training purposes. We have walked here before.

Giant cactus at Liberty Station's "undeveloped" SE corner

Marines marching at Marine Corps Recruit Depot next door at the East end of the channel -- these guys are being "privatized"

Time to leaf. Ha Ha

Thanks for everyone sharing this walk with us!

BONUS SECTION - for pilots only or those missing air travel in Covid times.

Walking route shown in Red

Since the airport is just south of that channel, I got a few take-off photos.

World's smallest Fedex aircraft?

We thank you for coming with us.
